Scilly's wildlife
Wildlife on the Isles of Scilly is like nowhere else on earth. The diversity of habitats makes it hugely biodiverse. Some species are only found here in the UK, whilst others thrive in abundance. That said, some common UK species are missing from Scilly, including many mammals (like badgers, hares and otters), garden birds (like magpies and rooks) and reptiles (like adders, grass snakes and lizards). Over 450 species of bird have been recorded on the Isles of Scilly, but only 50 or so of those actually breed. Our position on the Wild Atlantic Edge makes us a melting pot of diverse wildlife, governed by the tides, the waves and the seasons.
